When I started shaving with soap and a brush (and a mach 3) ~21 years ago, I used a boar brush for the first couple of years. My biggest struggle with the boar is it seems to absorb/disolve the lather on the brush after the initial face lather, this requiring a full new load and lather for any additional passes.
